What it asks
The questions underwriters ask, in plain English.
Each one comes with a line saying why it's asked, so your client answers fully the first time.
- 1Which areas of law does the firm practise? Tick all that apply. Each area carries a different risk. Conveyancing, wills and probate, and high-value litigation bring the most claims.
- 2How do you make sure each retainer is scoped accurately and agreed by the client?Disputes about what the firm agreed to do are behind many claims.
- 3In the last 5 years, has the firm acted on sales or purchases of off-plan, new-build or refurbished development units?Developments that stall or fail leave buyers who lost deposits looking for someone to sue.
- 4Do staff who approve or make payments get anti-fraud training?Conveyancing funds diverted by fake emails are a leading cause of large claims.
- 5Are there plans for the firm to stop practising, through retirement, merger or otherwise, in the next 18 months?A firm that closes needs six years of run-off cover under the SRA's rules.
- 6What percentage of last year's fees came from clients based in the USA or Canada?Claims involving US or Canadian clients can be brought in courts there, which most policies limit.
- 7Is anyone in the firm aware of a mistake, complaint or situation that could lead to a claim?Anything known before cover starts is excluded unless declared now.

Minimum cover
SRA minimum terms
Firms regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority must hold qualifying insurance on the SRA's minimum terms and conditions.
- Solicitors Regulation Authority
- Cover must be at least £3 million for each claim for a relevant recognised body or relevant licensed body, and at least £2 million in all other cases, not counting defence costs.
A summary, not advice. Which minimum applies depends on how the SRA classes the firm. Will writers and non-reserved practitioners outside SRA regulation are not bound by these rules: their professional body or clients set the limit.

Before you ask
Questions about the solicitors fact finder.
- Is the solicitors' fact finder really free?
- Yes. Answer it on the page as your client would, and download it as a fillable PDF with your logo, with no login and no email. Sending it to a client as a link comes with a free 14-day trial.
- How does it fill the insurers' forms?
- Each question is linked to the same question on the insurers' forms in the Coverbound Form Library. When your client answers the fact finder, starting an insurer's form puts their answers in, and your client confirms them instead of typing them again. The rest of each form, mostly tables of names, matters and past claims, they answer there.
- Which insurers' forms does it fill?
- Proposal forms from Travelers (solicitors, freelance solicitors and non-reserved practitioners), Pen and NBS (will writers). The page shows how much of each one it fills.
- Does it cover freelance solicitors and will writers?
- Yes. The same questions fill Travelers' freelance solicitors and non-reserved legal activity forms and NBS's will writers' form, as well as the full solicitors' forms.
- Does it work out the cover my client needs?
- No. It collects what your client tells you and drafts a demands and needs summary in their own words for you to finish. The advice is yours.
