What it asks

The questions underwriters ask, in plain English.

Each one comes with a line saying why it's asked, so your client answers fully the first time.

Minimum cover

Compulsory cover for Australian law practices

A law practice's primary professional indemnity is compulsory and comes from its state's scheme. This fact finder is for the cover above it, not instead of it.

Law Society of NSW
Solicitors must hold or be covered by an approved policy before they practise in NSW. The approved policy comes from Lawcover.
Lawcover (NSW)
Cover is up to $2 million each claim, including the claimant's and defence costs. Lawcover's own top-up cover goes beyond that, up to $20 million.
LPLC (Victoria)
All Victorian law practices must insure with LPLC unless the Legal Services Board exempts them. The limit is $2.5 million for any one loss, including defence costs, from 1 July 2025.
Queensland Law Society
Every law practice in Queensland must hold professional indemnity insurance, provided through Lexon.
Law Society of South Australia
The scheme is compulsory for practitioners in private practice, at $2 million per claim including defence costs. Practices may buy top-up cover through a broker.

A summary, not advice. Western Australia, Tasmania, the ACT and the NT run their own schemes. Check the current scheme terms before setting a top-up limit.

Before you ask

Questions about the lawyers fact finder.

Is the lawyers' fact finder really free?
Yes. Answer it on the page as your client would, and download it as a fillable PDF with your logo, with no login and no email. Sending it to a client as a link comes with a free 14-day trial.
How does it fill the insurers' forms?
Each question is linked to the same question on the insurers' forms in the Coverbound Form Library. When your client answers the fact finder, starting an insurer's form puts their answers in, and your client confirms them instead of typing them again. The rest of each form, mostly tables of names, matters and past claims, they answer there.
Which insurers' forms does it fill?
Proposal forms from Arch (PI excess for solicitors), Vero and Zurich (statutory liability). The page shows how much of each one it fills.
Does it replace the compulsory scheme?
No. Primary professional indemnity for Australian law practices is compulsory and comes from the state scheme, such as Lawcover or LPLC. This fact finder is for top-up cover above the scheme, statutory liability and the firm's other insurance.
Does it work out the cover my client needs?
No. It collects what your client tells you and drafts a needs summary in their own words for you to finish. The advice is yours.
