Why it matters

New laws keep raising the bar, and many turn on size

In plain English

Three things to know about these laws

They are not just for big business, they reach the insurance and they keep changing.

  • Size is the trigger

Ransomware reporting and the privacy principles start above $3m turnover. Climate reporting starts at 2 of 3 size tests. Staff numbers bring in the psychosocial duties.

  • Each one touches a cover

Cyber for ransomware and privacy, management liability for psychosocial hazards, D&O for climate reporting. A new duty is a new way to be sued or fined.

  • Close counts

A business near a threshold today may cross it next year. We flag those as close to the line so the conversation starts early.

How brokers use it

Three ways to turn a new law into a better renewal

  1. 1

Ask the size questions every year

Ransomware reporting and the privacy principles turn on $3m turnover. Climate reporting turns on revenue, assets and staff. A client can cross a line without anyone noticing.

    Department of Home Affairs
  2. 2

Match each law to a cover

Ransomware and privacy point to cyber. Psychosocial hazards point to management liability and employment practices. Climate reporting points to D&O. Review those lines when a law applies.

  3. 3

Write it down for the client

A short letter that lists the laws that reach the business, and the covers you reviewed, is good advice and a good record.

Questions brokers ask

The regulation checker, answered

Is this legal advice?
No. It is a general guide to where each law draws its lines. The client's lawyer or accountant can confirm whether a law applies and what it requires. You can make sure the insurance responds.
Should I use group figures?
Yes, where the client is part of a group. Several of these laws count turnover, assets and staff across the group.
What does close to the line mean?
The business is within 20% of a threshold on enough tests that growth or a restructure could bring it in. It is worth raising now.
How often are the laws updated?
We check dates and thresholds as laws commence and change. Each law shows its source so you can check it yourself.
Which covers should I review?
Each law lists the covers it touches, such as cyber, management liability and D&O. The PDF lists them for the client.
Is my client's data stored?
No. The checker runs in your browser. Figures only leave it if you make the PDF, which goes to our report builder to print.
