What it asks
The questions underwriters ask, in plain English.
Each one comes with a line saying why it's asked, so your client answers fully the first time.
- 1Which of these describe what the organisation does? Tick all that apply. Some activities, such as refuges, NDIS services or advice, are rated very differently from a community group.
- 2Do new volunteers go through screening, reference checks and an induction?Insurers look for a volunteer program because volunteers are treated much like staff when something goes wrong.
- 3Is the organisation exempt from stamp duty on insurance? Some charities and not-for-profits are exempt in some states. The insurer needs a copy of the exemption.
- 4Does anyone sit on the board of another organisation at the organisation's request?Outside directorships can be covered, but only when they are declared.
- 5In the last 2 years, has there been any employment dispute, such as an unfair dismissal claim or a matter taken to the Fair Work Commission?Past disputes are the best guide insurers have to future employment claims.
- 6Would you like cover for abuse claims?Abuse is excluded from standard liability cover. It has to be added, with its own limit.

Minimum cover
What sets the limit
We know of no law that sets a minimum public liability or management liability limit for a not-for-profit in Australia. The limit usually comes from the people the organisation deals with.
- Funding agreements
- Government and philanthropic funding agreements often require public liability and professional indemnity cover at set limits. Check each agreement.
- Councils and venue owners
- A council licence, lease or venue hire agreement may set the public liability limit and ask to be noted on the policy. Check each one.
- Peak bodies and members
- A peak body, state association or the organisation's own constitution may require cover for the board. Check the rules that apply.
A summary, not advice. Workers compensation is compulsory for employers and is arranged separately in each state.

Questions about the not-for-profits fact finder.
- Is the not-for-profits fact finder really free?
- Yes. Answer it on the page as your client would, then download it as a fillable PDF with your logo. There's no login and no email. Sending it to a client as a link comes with a free 14-day trial.
- Which insurers' forms does it fill?
- Association liability forms from DUAL (including its WebRater), Vero, Nova and Arch, plus Arch's Not For Profit Plus. It also fills the general public liability, property, cyber and management liability forms. The page shows how much of each one it fills.
- Is there a minimum limit for not-for-profits?
- Not in law. Funding agreements, a council licence or venue hire, a peak body or the organisation's own constitution usually set it. The fact finder asks your client which ones apply.
- Does it cover the board as well as public liability?
- Yes. It asks what insurers need for management liability, employment practices, statutory liability and fidelity cover. It also asks whether your client wants abuse cover, which standard liability policies exclude.
