What it asks
The questions underwriters ask, in plain English.
Each one comes with a line saying why it's asked, so your client answers fully the first time.
- 1Are there any related or subsidiary entities (such as a trading arm or foundation) that should be insured too? If so, name them.Only the entities named on the policy are covered.
- 2Do new volunteers go through screening, reference checks and an induction?Insurers look for volunteer screening because volunteers are treated much like staff when something goes wrong.
- 3Does the organisation give advice for a fee?Paid advice needs professional indemnity cover.
- 4Is the charity exempt from having an Employer Reference Number (ERN)?Employers' liability policies record the ERN unless the charity is exempt.
- 5What trustee indemnity or directors and officers limit would you like?Board members can be sued personally for decisions they make for the organisation.
- 6Would you like cover for abuse claims?Abuse is excluded from standard liability cover. It has to be added, with its own limit.

Minimum cover
Compulsory cover for charities
Employers' liability is the one cover the law requires of a charity with staff. Trustee indemnity and other covers are a choice for the trustees.
- GOV.UK (Employers' Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 1969)
- Most employers must hold employers' liability insurance from an authorised insurer as soon as they take on staff, with cover of at least £5 million. GOV.UK lists the exemptions. The fine is up to £2,500 for each day without it.
- Funders, councils and venue owners
- Grant agreements, leases and hire agreements often set the public liability limit. Check each one.
A summary, not advice. A charity whose only workers are unpaid volunteers may not need employers' liability, but many insurers include volunteers anyway.

- Which insurers' forms does it fill?
- Ecclesiastical's charity and non-profit professional indemnity and trustees' and management liability forms, Markel's charities and community groups form and Zurich Municipal's trustee and trust fund indemnity form. It also fills general forms from CFC, Chubb, DUAL and Travelers. The page shows how much of each one it fills.
- Is insurance compulsory for a charity?
- Employers' liability is, once the charity takes on staff, at a limit of at least £5 million. Trustee indemnity and other covers are a choice for the trustees. Grant agreements, leases and hire agreements often set the public liability limit.
- Does it cover trustee indemnity?
- Yes. It asks what insurers need for trustee indemnity: total assets, independently checked accounts, outside board seats and any known circumstances. Those answers fill Ecclesiastical's and Zurich Municipal's trustee forms.
