What it asks

The questions underwriters ask, in plain English.

Each one comes with a line saying why it's asked, so your client answers fully the first time.

  1. 1On average, how many people attend each event?Crowd size is the main measure insurers use to rate an event.
  2. 2Have you ever sold travel packages, acting as a travel agent or tour operator?Package travel brings duties under the package travel regulations that event cover may not include.
  3. 3Do your events include anything that could hurt spectators or damage property, such as special effects, pyrotechnics, rides or amusements? Many event policies exclude these unless they are agreed.
  4. 4Have you signed, or will you sign, a lease or contract that makes you responsible for loss or injury that would not normally be your fault?Venue and council hire agreements often include a hold harmless clause.
  5. 5Do your contracts always exclude liability for indirect losses and lost profits?A client's lost profits from a failed event can far exceed your fee.
  6. 6What waivers or liability notices do you display, on tickets or at the event?Insurers ask what you've done to limit claims from people attending.

Minimum cover

Compulsory cover for UK event businesses

Public liability is not compulsory for event organisers, but employers' liability is if the business has staff.

GOV.UK: employers' liability insurance
Most employers must hold employers' liability insurance from an authorised insurer as soon as they take on staff, covering at least £5 million. Being uninsured can bring a fine of £2,500 for every day.
Councils and venues
Local authorities, land owners and venues set a public liability limit in their licence or hire terms. Check each one.

A summary, not advice. Close family members and staff based outside Great Britain can be exempt. Check the current rules before setting a limit.

Which insurers' forms does it fill?
Hiscox's event organisers professional indemnity proposal. It also fills general cyber and management liability forms from CFC, Chubb, DUAL and Travelers. The page shows how much of each one it fills.
Is insurance compulsory for event organisers?
Employers' liability is, if the business has staff, at a limit of at least £5 million. Public liability isn't required by law, but local authorities, land owners and venues set a limit in their licence or hire terms.
Does it cover professional indemnity?
Yes. It asks what share of income comes from each kind of event work, how client contracts limit liability and whether the business has sold package travel. Those answers fill Hiscox's event organisers PI form.
