What it asks
The questions underwriters ask, in plain English.
Each one comes with a line saying why it's asked, so your client answers fully the first time.
- 1What is your GMC registration number?Insurers check your registration and any conditions on it.
- 2Do you need cover for private work that the NHS indemnity schemes don't cover?NHS indemnity covers NHS work only.
- 3How much did your private practice earn in the last complete financial year, leaving out medico-legal work?Private income is the main measure insurers use to price the cover.
- 4Do you plan to retire or stop practising in the UK in the next 5 years?Claims can arrive years after treatment, so retiring doctors need run-off cover.
- 5List the services you provide and roughly what share of the work each makes up.Surgery, obstetrics and cosmetic work are rated far higher than consulting.
- 6Have you ever had a claim, complaint or allegation of negligence made against you, even one decided in your favour?Leaving one out can let an insurer refuse a later claim.

Minimum cover
The GMC indemnity requirement
Licensed doctors in the UK must have indemnity that gives appropriate cover for their practice. NHS work is covered by the NHS indemnity schemes, so private work needs its own cover.
- Medical Act 1983, section 44C
- A licensed doctor who practises must have in force an indemnity arrangement that provides appropriate cover. It may be an insurance policy, another indemnity arrangement or a combination of the two.
A summary, not advice. The GMC can ask for evidence of cover and refuse or remove a licence to practise without it. No minimum figure is set: cover must suit the scope of the doctor's practice.

Questions about the doctors fact finder.
- Is the doctors' fact finder really free?
- Yes. Answer it on the page as your client would, then download it as a fillable PDF with your logo, with no login and no email. Sending it to a client as a link comes with a free 14-day trial.
- Which insurers' forms does it fill?
- CFC's medical liability, surgeons and doctors and NHS practitioners forms. It also fills general cyber and management liability forms, from insurers including CFC, Chubb, DUAL and Travelers. The page shows how much of each one it fills.
- Is there a minimum limit for doctors?
- No minimum figure is set. Under section 44C of the Medical Act 1983 a licensed doctor who practises must have indemnity that gives appropriate cover for their practice. The GMC can ask for evidence of it.
- Does it cover NHS work?
- NHS work is covered by the NHS indemnity schemes. The fact finder asks what the doctor does for the NHS so private work can be insured on its own.
