What it asks
The questions underwriters ask, in plain English.
Each one comes with a line saying why it's asked, so your client answers fully the first time.
- 1Has the provider ever had sanctions imposed under the Aged Care Act?Sanctions tell an insurer about the standard of care, however old they are.
- 2How many high care (nursing home) beds do you have?Beds and units are how aged care insurers measure size.
- 3Care for clients who need ventilation, a tracheostomy, PEG feeding, catheter care or bowel care?Complex health care is where malpractice claims come from.
- 4Does the provider give psychotropic medication or use any other form of restraint?Restraint is closely regulated and a frequent source of claims.
- 5Would you like cover for abuse claims? Most liability policies exclude abuse unless it is added, often with its own limit.
- 6Is the gym equipment checked every two weeks, with a logbook kept? Some insurers make this a condition of cover for a gym.

Minimum cover
What sets the limit
We know of no regulator that sets a minimum public liability or malpractice limit for aged care providers in Australia. The limit usually comes from the provider's own agreements.
- Funding and service agreements
- Government and council funding agreements often name the covers and limits a provider must hold. Check each one.
- Leases and residents' contracts
- Leases of care premises and retirement village contracts can set a public liability limit or ask to be noted on the policy.
A summary, not advice. Workers compensation is compulsory for employers under each state's scheme and is arranged separately.

Before you ask
Questions about the aged care fact finder.
- Is the aged care fact finder really free?
- Yes. Answer it on the page as your client would, then download it as a fillable PDF with your logo, with no login and no email. Sending it to a client as a link comes with a free 14-day trial.
- Which insurers' forms does it fill?
- Aged care forms from Ansvar (aged care and retirement village packages), Pen (aged care combined liability and its sexual abuse addendum) and Pacific Indemnity (nursing homes malpractice addendum). It also fills the general public liability, property, cyber and management liability forms, from insurers including CFC, Chubb, DUAL and Pen. The page shows how much of each one it fills.
- Is there a minimum limit for aged care providers?
- Not from a regulator that we know of. Funding agreements, leases and retirement village contracts usually set it, so the fact finder asks your client what limit they need. Workers compensation is compulsory under each state's scheme and is arranged separately.
- Does it cover retirement villages and home care?
- Yes. Your client ticks what the provider runs, from residential care and home care to retirement village and over 55s units. The fact finder then asks only what applies.
