What it asks

The questions underwriters ask, in plain English.

Each one comes with a line saying why it's asked, so your client answers fully the first time.

  1. 1Is any sport played on a professional or semi-professional basis?Paid players are a very different risk from amateurs. Many policies exclude them.
  2. 2Does a governing body or association (such as the RFU) already provide public liability cover for your sporting activities?Governing body cover can overlap with the club's own, so insurers ask what it already insures.
  3. 3Are door and security staff vetted and SIA licensed?Door staff are involved in many assault claims at club bars and functions.
  4. 4Are there written procedures for regular checks for spills and broken glass during opening hours, with the checks recorded?Slips and trips are the most common claim against a club. Recorded checks are the best defence.
  5. 5Do any of the buildings contain composite (insulated sandwich) panels? Some panels burn fast. Many insurers decline or load buildings that have them.
  6. 6Is the club trading at a loss, or does it have debts it may not be able to pay?Claims against a committee are more likely when a club is in financial trouble.

Minimum cover

Compulsory cover for clubs

Employers' liability is the one cover the law requires of a club with paid staff. The public liability limit usually comes from the club's governing body or landlord.

GOV.UK (Employers' Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 1969)
Most employers must hold employers' liability insurance from an authorised insurer as soon as they take on staff, with cover of at least £5 million. GOV.UK lists the exemptions. The fine is up to £2,500 for each day without it.
Governing bodies and landlords
Your sport's governing body, a ground lease or the council may set a public liability limit. Check each one. Also check whether the governing body's own cover already insures your sporting activities.

A summary, not advice. A club whose only workers are unpaid volunteers may not need employers' liability, but many insurers include volunteers anyway.

Questions about the sports clubs fact finder.

Is the sports clubs fact finder really free?
Yes. Answer it on the page as your client would, then download it as a fillable PDF with your logo. There's no login and no email. Sending it to a client as a link comes with a free 14-day trial.
Which insurers' forms does it fill?
Camberford's sports and social clubs proposal. It also fills general cyber and management liability forms from CFC, Chubb, DUAL and Travelers. The page shows how much of each one it fills.
Is insurance compulsory for a sports club?
Employers' liability is, once the club takes on paid staff, at a limit of at least £5 million. The public liability limit usually comes from the club's governing body, a ground lease or the council.
What if the governing body already insures the club?
The fact finder asks whether your sport's governing body already provides public liability for your client's sporting activities. That shows you what the club's own policy still needs to cover, such as the bar and functions.
