What it asks

The questions underwriters ask, in plain English.

Each one comes with a line saying why it's asked, so your client answers fully the first time.

  1. 1Has the business or anyone running it ever had a liquor licence breach notice, demerit points, a suspension or cancellation, or special conditions imposed?Licence breaches tell insurers how well the venue is run.
  2. 2Do you use security staff or crowd controllers? Most assault claims against venues involve security staff, so insurers ask how they are engaged.
  3. 3Do you meet the security company regularly to review their conduct and improve procedures?Insurers look for venues that manage their crowd controllers, not just hire them.
  4. 4Do you run or host sport for patrons or members, such as bowls, golf, darts or team sports?Sport brings its own injuries. Some policies exclude it unless agreed.
  5. 5Do you give advice or instruction for a fee, such as golf coaching or fitness classes?Paid instruction can need professional indemnity as well as public liability.
  6. 6Are there bollards in front of every entrance a vehicle could be driven into?Ram raids target bottle shops, ATMs and gaming rooms.

Minimum cover

What sets the limit

We know of no law that sets a minimum public liability limit for licensed venues in Australia. A liquor licence does not set one.

Leases
Hotel and venue leases usually set the limit and ask for the owner to be named on the policy.
Councils
Outdoor dining permits and venues on council land often require a set limit.
Contracts
Function bookings, sporting bodies and entertainment contracts may set their own limit.

A summary, not advice. Check every lease, permit and contract before setting a limit.

Before you ask

Questions about the pubs, bars and clubs fact finder.

Is the pubs, bars and clubs fact finder really free?
Yes. Answer it on the page as your client would, then download it as a fillable PDF with your logo. There's no login and no email. Sending it to a client as a link comes with a free 14-day trial.
Which insurers' forms does it fill?
Pen's licensed premises and licensed club proposals and renewal declarations, Pen's hospitality property proposal, One Underwriting's hotels package and the hospitality liability forms from Arch, Axis and One Underwriting. It also fills the general public liability, property, cyber and management liability forms. The page shows how much of each one it fills.
Does a liquor licence set a minimum limit?
No. We know of no law that sets one for licensed venues. The lease, a council outdoor dining permit or a function or entertainment contract usually does, so the fact finder asks your client which ones apply.
Does it cover licensed clubs as well as pubs?
Yes. It fills Pen's licensed club proposal and renewal declaration as well as its licensed premises forms. It also asks about sport for members, such as bowls or golf, plus any paid coaching.

Ask once. Fill every form.
