What it asks
The questions underwriters ask, in plain English.
Each one comes with a line saying why it's asked, so your client answers fully the first time.
- 1Which of these does the business do? Tick all that apply. Each kind of work carries a different risk. Hardware, hosting and work on critical systems cost the most to insure.
- 2Could a failure of your product or service injure or kill someone? Most technology policies cover financial loss only. Injury and property damage need to be declared and priced.
- 3Do you ever agree to be liable for a client's indirect or consequential losses, such as lost profits?Consequential losses are where large technology claims come from.
- 4Do you agree a written specification or statement of work with the client before work starts? Most technology claims are disputes about what was promised.
- 5Is two-factor authentication required for all remote access to your network? Most ransomware gets in through remote access or email without two-factor authentication.
- 6Roughly how many people or organisations do you hold personal or confidential records about? The number of records drives the cost of notifying people after a breach.
- 7Have you ever sent or received a cease and desist letter about intellectual property?Copyright and patent claims are common against technology businesses and expensive to defend.

Minimum cover
What sets the limit
We know of no regulator that sets a minimum professional indemnity limit for it consultants in Australia. Check any licence or membership the business holds.
- ACS Professional Standards Scheme
- ACS members in the scheme who provide technology services must hold professional indemnity insurance that meets the scheme's insurance standards, which ties the cover to the member's capped liability. Members are in the scheme unless an exemption applies.
- Client contracts and tenders
- Otherwise the limit is usually set by client contracts, government supplier panels and tenders.
A summary, not advice. Check each client contract for the limit it asks for before choosing one.

Before you ask
Questions about the it consultants fact finder.
- Does it cover cyber as well as professional indemnity?
- Yes. Technology forms combine professional indemnity, cyber and products liability, so the fact finder asks the cyber controls and data questions too, and the answers fill those sections.
- Which insurers' forms does it fill?
- The technology forms in the Coverbound Form Library for Australia. The page shows, form by form, how many questions your client's answers fill.
- Why ask for a split of revenue by service?
- Insurers price each kind of technology work differently, and each form lists its own categories. Your client answers once and the split fills every form that asks it the same way.
- Does it suit managed service providers?
- Yes. It asks the questions MSP and IT services forms dwell on: managed services and hosting, access to clients' systems, hardware installation, and the controls that stop an attack spreading to clients.
- Is it free?
- Yes. Send it to clients, download the fillable PDF, or use it inside Coverbound to fill insurer forms.
