What it asks

The questions underwriters ask, in plain English.

Each one comes with a line saying why it's asked, so your client answers fully the first time.

  1. 1Roughly how many people attend in an average week, across all services and activities?Attendance is how insurers size a church's public liability.
  2. 2Do you hire out the church, hall or rooms to outside groups?Hirers bring their own risks onto your premises.
  3. 3Do ministers, staff or volunteers give pastoral counselling or advice?Counselling can lead to claims of bad advice, which professional indemnity covers.
  4. 4Is the church building left open to the public without anyone present? An open, unattended building is more exposed to theft and vandalism.
  5. 5What is the value of any items that would be costly to replace, such as an organ, bells, stained glass or artworks? Some of these need to be listed separately so they are insured for their full value.
  6. 6Would you like cover for abuse claims?Abuse is excluded from standard liability cover. It has to be added, with its own limit.

Minimum cover

What sets the limit

We know of no law that sets a minimum public liability limit for a church in Australia. The limit usually comes from the people the church deals with.

Denominations and networks
A denomination, diocese or network may require each church to carry set covers, including abuse cover. Check its requirements.
Councils and venue owners
Using a council park, school hall or other venue for services or events often needs public liability at a set limit. Check each hire agreement.
Hirers of your hall
Ask hirers to carry their own public liability so a claim from their event doesn't fall on the church.

A summary, not advice. Workers compensation is compulsory for employers and is arranged separately in each state.

Questions about the churches fact finder.

Is the churches fact finder really free?
Yes. Answer it on the page as your client would, then download it as a fillable PDF with your logo. There's no login and no email. Sending it to a client as a link comes with a free 14-day trial.
Which insurers' forms does it fill?
Ansvar's Faith Package. It also fills the general public liability, property, cyber and management liability forms. The page shows how much of each one it fills.
Is there a minimum limit for churches?
Not in law. A denomination, diocese or network may require set covers, including abuse cover. Councils and venue owners often set a limit when the church hires their space.
Does it ask about groups that hire the church hall?
Yes. It asks whether the church hires out its buildings and whether hirers must hold their own public liability, so a claim from a hirer's event doesn't fall on the church.
