What it asks

The questions underwriters ask, in plain English.

Each one comes with a line saying why it's asked, so your client answers fully the first time.

  1. 1What kind of care does the service provide? Tick all that apply.Family day care and outside school hours care carry different risks from a centre.
  2. 2Does the service need a licence, registration or accreditation to operate?Insurers check that a care service is approved to do the work it is insured for.
  3. 3How many children are enrolled now?Enrolments are how childcare insurers measure size.
  4. 4What medical examinations, treatments or medication do the service's staff give?Giving medication is what malpractice cover is for, so describe what staff actually do.
  5. 5Would you like cover for abuse claims? Most liability policies exclude abuse unless it is added, often with its own limit.
  6. 6Will the service run any event at a venue it does not occupy where more than 500 people are expected, such as a carols night?Large public events are excluded from many care liability policies unless declared.

Minimum cover

Compulsory cover for childcare services

A condition of every service approval under the Education and Care Services National Law is public liability cover.

ACECQA, Guide to the National Quality Framework
Regulation 29 requires the approved provider to hold public liability insurance of at least $10 million for each service, unless a state or territory government provides it. A policy that pays less than $10 million for a category that matters to children's safety, such as abuse, does not meet the rule.
Family day care
Regulation 30 requires each family day care educator to hold their own public liability insurance of at least $10 million.

A summary, not advice. Evidence of the insurance must be kept at the service, or at the principal office for family day care.
