What it asks
The questions underwriters ask, in plain English.
Each one comes with a line saying why it's asked, so your client answers fully the first time.
- 1Which services does the practice provide? Tick all that apply.Insurers rate each profession differently. Some treatments carry more risk.
- 2How many qualified practitioners (including owners) treat clients?Professional indemnity is usually priced per practitioner.
- 3Is the practice a registered NDIS provider?Registered providers must hold the insurance the NDIS Commission asks for.
- 4Do you take each client's medical history before their first treatment? Most claims start with a treatment that should not have been given to that client.
- 5Do the contractors who treat clients for the practice hold their own professional indemnity insurance? If they don't, a claim about their work may land on the practice's policy.
- 6What is the retroactive date (if you know it)?Professional indemnity covers past work only back to this date, so it must carry over unchanged.

Minimum cover
Cover registered practitioners must hold
Practitioners registered through AHPRA must hold professional indemnity arrangements that meet their National Board's registration standard.
- AHPRA and the National Boards
- Registered health practitioners must have professional indemnity insurance arrangements that comply with their board's registration standard. They must declare at registration and each renewal that they will not practise without them.
A summary, not advice. Each board's standard sets what appropriate cover means for that profession. Self-regulated professions such as massage, counselling and dietetics take their minimum from their association. Landlords, hospitals and funders often set the public liability limit.
